Session III - Probiotics/Gut Health

Dr. Silva received his veterinary degree in 1972, from UFMG, Brazil and his MSc in 1976 and PhD in 1978  both from the State University of Sao Paulo (USP). From 1979-80, he was visiting professor at the University of Massachusetts, in Amherst, MA, USA, working on vaccines for fowl typhoid.

Teaching & research experiences. In 1973,he joined the College of Veterinary Medicine (FMVZ) of USP. From 1973 to1990, he lectured on diseases of poultry to Veterinary students, and did extension services to the poultry industry in a steadily poultry growing period in the most important producing state. In 1991, he moved to a sister university (State University of Campinas - Unicamp), teaching food hygiene and safety on poultry products until retirement in 2007 as full professor.  During his entire career, his research focused on gut health, mainly Salmonellosis  and associated public health problems, looking for diagnosis methodology and control measures. He supervised many undergraduate and graduate students (MSc and PhD) and published more than two hundred papers.

Poultry Association experiences. In 1981, he was invited to chair the technical department of the newest formed Association of day-old chick producers in Brazil .He organized, in the same year, the first Seminar on "Quality of Day-old Chicks" which was an annual event and, later the most recognized Brazilian poultry conference under a Foundation umbrella named FACTA (www.facta.org.br), that represents WPSA Brazilian Branch. Besides the Annual Conference, Facta organizes many training courses, seminars and has published several technical teaching books. A Brazilian Poultry Science quarterlyJournal (ISSN1516-635X) has been published since 1999  in English under FACTA's coordination. Since that time he has been with the Facta's executive committee and serving as President in the last term. In 1998 he led a team to reestablish the Brazilian Branch of the WPSA (became its President) in order to present a bid to host the Congress in Brazil which was held in Brazil in 2012.

Experience as entrepreneur. In 1981 with three other partners, he established a poultry vaccine company as its R&D director. This company became one of the leaders in vaccine production in Brazil until it was sold in 1996 to a multinational enterprise, with a portfolio of 36 licensed products. He stayed out of the vaccine business, by signed agreement with the buyers for five years.. After this period , he returned to the vaccine and probiotic market for poultry establishing two more other laboratories. Inspite of all these activities, he  has attended poultry meetings all over the world, presenting papers and lectures as an invited guest. Dr Silva has received many awards and recognitions for his contributions to the poultry industry in Brazil and the World.
